Remote volunteers boost Seaside I/N Regional
Planning tournaments has always
been full of unknowns and obstacles;
with the post-pandemic-new-endemic

there can be even
more challenges in store
for organizers, not to
mention that recruiting
volunteers can be difficult
without the network
of local clubs back to
healthy and active status.

Regional/Open Sectional in Seaside
OR is heartening news: The sectional
was within a few tables of pre-COVID
numbers, and the I/N regional was at
66% for a combined total of 81% attendance
for 2022 compared to 2019.
" There was a lot of talk about how
nice it was to get back to tournament
play, " said Jon Gustafson, who cochairs
the tournament with his wife,
Barbara.

most descriptive; three-card raises
work well with outside shortness.
4 Open 1l, then rebid 2k. A reverse.
5 Open 1l, then rebid 2k. Only 16
HCP, but great suits. It's a minimum
reverse; 17 HCP is just a guideline.
6 Open 1NT. Yes, it's OK to open 1NT
(small lie) with two doubletons if the
alternatives are worse (whopper).
7 Open 1l, then rebid 2k. You plan
to bid 3 on your third turn, bidding
out your pattern.
8 Open 1l, then rebid 2k. Yes, your
hand can be this good.
Vic Quiros of Phoenix AZ is an Emerald
Life Master. His focus for the past several
years has been on teaching, particularly
novice/intermediate players. As a career
educator, Vic brings the classroom alive
with his interactive style. He is a teacher
in his local bridge community, online and
on cruise ships.

" It was well-attended, and David did
his usual outstanding job, " said Don
Marsh, president of District 20.
The district's first F2F regional
since COVID, held in February, was
also above the 50% attendance mark
and earned a small profit, thanks in
part to renegotiating the contract to
downsize playing space and food and
beverage obligations and increased
volunteer effort.
