" South led the cQ and when she
saw the c4 (attitude) she played her
partner for the jack and played the 3
at trick two, " said Meyers. " It is true
that North did not have an option
of what to play at trick one and was
lucky to hold the lowest outstanding
club, but this was still brave defense.
Of course, North switched to a spade
after winning the cJ, so this was
swiftly down one; we were in 4h
doubled making at our table - they
opened a precision club, and I just
up and bid 4h to make them decide
what to do. Kerri sure had a great
dummy for me. "

cJ, and Jill, realizing that the 10
might be a later entry to dummy,
ducked from K-3. Declarer looked a
little surprised, then played the h9;
Jill gave a valiant Smith echo with
4-3 doubleton. When declarer played
the 2, I won the hQ and decided
that clubs were not the danger suit
anymore - either Jill had K-x-x or
x-x or K-x, in which case it was safe
to return another. Jill's king held the
trick. Now she made a key shift to a
spade into the dummy's good suit. I
knew now that when I won the next
heart (declarer had not left an entry
to dummy) to play a spade back.
Declarer could only make the hand
now by finessing, even though it was
obvious that the sK was offside. Jill
was down to all spades and diamonds
and would have been forced to provide
dummy with an entry. "
But declarer didn't know that
Meyers had no safe exit. She went
up with the sA and only had eight
tricks. At the other table, West played
the cK at trick one and 3NT made
easily.
" Big play at trick one. Takes a good
guess, guts, and good vision, " said
Sanborn.
