Mildred Breed | 1947-2024
Grand Life Master Mildred Breed of Houston TX died
Nov. 14. The two-time world champion and 17-time
NABC champion was 77.
Breed was a force in women's championship events. At
the world level, she earned two gold medals representing
the U.S., one for the 1997 Venice Cup and the other for
the 2000 Women's Olympiad. Breed also took home four
silver medals and three bronze medals during her career.
In NABC events, Breed was a four-time winner of
both the Wagar Women's Knockout Teams and the
Marsha May Sternberg Women's Board-a-Match Teams,
and she was a three-time champion in the Machlin
Women's Swiss Teams. In pair events, she won the
1980 Whitehead Women's Pairs (her first NABC title)
and enjoyed a remarkable " four-peat " in the Smith Life
Master Women's Pairs (1999-2002) with frequent partner
Shawn Quinn.
Breed, who also won the Rockwell Mixed Pairs in
2007, finished second in 11 NABC contests.
Quinn eulogized her partner on Bridge Winners:
" Mildred was one of my longtime partners and friends.

Petra Hamman and Joan Jackson as
well as Peggy Sutherlin and Robin
Klar. Bob had a good eye: Mildred and
I had similar work ethics and were
quickly able to develop an effective
partnership. Mildred was a terrific
declarer and defender. I appreciated
her level of focus and dedication. "
According to family, " Mildred was the life of the party,
with razor sharp wit and intellect. She adored her grandchildren,
cherishing the time she could spend with them.
She attended all of their performances and sporting
events, and loved taking them out to eat, always saying,
'You pick, I pay!' She was known by all for her quips
and retorts. When asked how she was doing, she would
always respond, 'If I was any better, I'd have to be twins!' "
Breed is survived by her daughter Monica Snideman,
son-in-law, Warren Snideman and granddaughters Cara
(Nick), Madison, Maya, Macy and Molly, and daughter
Rhiannon Breed, and grandsons Nathen, Luke, Dunk
and Avery. 2
