When deciding on this year's magazine cover, a construction theme seemed like a fitting
choice. Virtually every provider is in the midst of network upgrades, fiber rollouts and
greenfield expansions, and they are looking to add even more broadband projects with
billions in federal funds up for grabs.
However, it would be a mistake to think broadband buildouts are the only work zone
these days. Operators, such as MSO of the Year Cox Communications, are navigating the
intricacies of mobile by launching MVNOs. With a tight labor market, companies are
working hard to attract top talent and to keep and support those employees (see our
profiles of HR Executive of the Year Paul Marchand of Charter and Employee Connection
honoree Cable One).
It would be hard to imagine a more difficult terrain to deliver broadband to than Alaska,
where GCI deploys more than 800 miles of subsea fiber-optic cable to connect a dozen
Aleutian, Alaska Peninsula and Kodiak Island communities. But that herculean effort isn't
stopping our Independent Operator of the Year from focusing on what it can do to foster
a more inclusive environment, with it launching employee resource groups in the past
two years focused on the LGBTQ+ community and Indigenous people.
In this issue, we recognize our first-ever Fiber Provider of the Year, Metronet. It's growing
at a staggering pace, offering service in more than 250 communities across 16 states
with a foundation of taking care of each other, the company and the customer.
Last year, Cablefax bestowed its inaugural Founders Circle Award on former ACA Connects
CEO Matt Polka. It's a special honor reserved for trailblazers who helped form the
broadband and cable industry. Now the circle now grows a little wider with Charter Executive
Chairman Tom Rutledge joining its ranks. Talking to Rutledge about his 50-year
career in cable was a reminder to me of just how much this industry has achieved and
the amazing feats it has taking to get here.
This magazine is filled with innovative individuals and companies
who are taking a 360-approach to business and reaping
the benefits. Work zones are busy, noisy, chaotic and, yes,
risky. It takes digging deep in the trenches-both the physical
and metaphorical ones-to build something lasting and impactful.
The bedrock is strong, and I, for one, am excited to see
what's next.
