HERE AGAIN
To be honest, I thought I'd be writing this editor's letter about how America
had elected its first female president. Some would have been unhappy with
who it was, while others would have been jubilant. Many are feeling uncertain.
But putting politics aside, it remains a fact that no woman has broken through
the White House glass ceiling. Yet.
When my daughter asked me on Nov. 9 if a woman will ever be president, I
answered yes without hesitation. With so many amazing, intelligent women,
it's a given. Just look at the Most Powerful Women in Cable. You have women
in these pages who have made it their mission to lift others up. Women who
are pioneering technological innovation. Women who are shrewd negotiators.
Women who are speaking up in boardrooms. Who knows... maybe one of the
Most Powerful Women will someday be elected to the most powerful office in
the land.
The previous two paragraphs are from my editor's note in Cablefax's 2016
Most Powerful Women issue. The fact they're still applicable today is a
reminder that there are still boundaries to break through, regardless of
whether it's a Republican or Democrat who becomes the first female commander
in chief. My daughter was 11 years old when I wrote those words.
Today, she's 19, in her first year of college and still asking me the same question.
However, the wide-eyed optimism she had back then has sadly been
replaced with some hardness and disillusionment.
She's old enough now to be engaged in current events and aware of how
in 2023 the gender wage gap between men and women working full-time
widened year-over-year for the first time in 20 years. As she's looking at
career options, she has to contend with the fact women are less likely than
men to attain their very first promotion to a manager role. For every 100 men
who received their first promotion to manager, 81 women are promoted,
according to McKinsey & Company and LeanIn.org.'s 2024 Women in the
Workplace study. That's not much change from 2018, when 79 women got
the offer for every 100 men.
That's why I believe Cablefax's Most Powerful Women issue is important.
By highlighting these leaders, we provide role models, especially for young
women who might not see themselves in such positions. Celebrating successful
women leaders can also challenge the unconscious
biases that affect decision-making in hiring,
promotions and pay. And it's exciting to see a large
contingent of women who are leading their companies
and industry into new frontiers while finding time
to mentor and sponsor others.
As our Women's Advancement Champion Cosmina
Schulman of NESN told me, there's a hunger for this
guidance. " There is a void for mentorship. They're getting
their career advice from TikTok, " she says. With so
much wise advice in these pages from our Most Powerful
Women honorees, I'm certainly going to pass this
issue on to my daughter. Hopefully, it offers guidance
and returns some of her sense of optimism.
