40 YEARS OF
2024 marks the 40th anniversary of the National Content & Technology Cooperative, known more familiarly
by the industry as NCTC or " the co-op. " The organization was formed in 1984 during a poker game in Kansas
City at the Mid-America Show with a group of cable operators banding together so that they could get better
deals with programmers as a collective unit. It's evolved into more, serving as a broadband solutions and
hardware purchasing organization for members and more recently launching a turnkey MVNO offering. Let's
take a look at some of the NCTC milestones over the years.
2006
1996
Passage of the 1996 Telecommunications
Act delivers rate deregulation for independent
cable operators.
NCTC and ACA rebrand
their annual meeting
as " The Independent
Show, " holding their
renamed joint meeting
in Chicago.
2017
IP-based video delivery company MobiTV
inks a deal with the co-op to help members
transitioning their video offerings to IP/appbased
solution.
1998
1984
NCTC is formed after operators attending
the Mid-America Cable Show decide they
could take advantage of volume discounts
as a member-operated purchasing group.
Originally named Mid-America National Cable
Television Cooperative, it was quickly shortened
to National Cable Television Cooperative
with Mike Pandzik, then in sales at HBO, hired
to run the group. The co-op began with about
12 companies and 110,000 subscribers with
Pandzik running it from his living room for the
first two years.
NCTC holds its first
annual summer meeting
as well as its first
Winter Educational
Conference. The co-op
expands its services
to include group purchasing
for managed
WiFi and broadband
services.
2011
Former Ascent Media
exec Rich Fickle
is named CEO of
NCTC shortly after
Jeff Abbas' resignation.
The organization
now more than
950 member companies,
serving over
26.7 million households.
2019
Congress
passes the Television Viewer Protection
Act of 2019. The law requires that
broadcast TV station groups engage in goodfaith
negotiations with MVPD buying groups,
such as NCTC.
Pandzik retires as CEO
of NCTC. Jeff Abbas,
who joined the co-op
from
Adelphia two

Business Affairs, is selected
as the organization's
new leader.
