Facing the vast challenge of righting the sails on one of the media industry's largest behemoths,
Viacom's new chief is moving swiftly and steadily out of the gate. Bakish in January
solidified a three-year contract to lead Viacom, with an annual compensation package valued
at close to $20 million plus additional equity awards. And he's wasted no time outlining a
plan to cut loose the liabilities and generate even more heat around the power points. He's
focusing on six core flagship brands-BET, Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon, Nick Jr. and
Paramount-and on forging closer ties among the conglomerate's complementary sister
companies. Among finer points, niche network Spike soon will segue to the Paramount
Network, closer ties are blooming between Paramount Pictures and other Viacom distribution
pipes, and brand execs have a new mandate to hold on to. Reaction so far from Wall Street
has been favorable, and 2017 promises to be a pivotal year. ■

The nation's fourth largest cable provider is a new and major player in the industry. Created
through strategic planning and the acquisitions of Suddenlink in December 2015 and Cablevision
in June 2016, Altice is solidifying itself as a unified, customer-focused force thanks in
large part to Goei. He's also ensured the new entity is innovative and ahead of the technology
curve by investing in the Generation Gigaspeed plan to bring 10-gig speed fiber to the
majority of Altice's U.S. households within five years. The company already has demonstrated
its ability to accomplish a deployment of this scale in other parts of the world, and Goei's
commitment to providing residential and business customers with innovative technology, great
value, and top-notch services is the cornerstone of Altice's future success. ■

AT&T is evolving as the media giant looks to increase its content coffers, and Stankey is leading
strategy, marketing and operations for all of its consumer entertainment offerings across
platforms-plus its advertising business. He's aligned the consumer mobility, TV and Internet
business units in one organization to better serve customers. A chief architect of DirecTV
Now, which launched in November, Stankey helped shape the streaming service as a middle
road between bulging premium pay TV packages and skinny bundles, of which he's not a fan.
With AT&T's impending bid for Time Warner on the horizon, Stankey's got another vigorous
year ahead of him. ■
