A WEDDING
AT THE
INDIE SHOW
It's a tradition that we make this
edition of CableFAX: The Magazine
a summer read, so our top operator
profi les can be consumed leisurely,
during your vacation.
As our smooth sailing cover
indicates, this summer should be
more pleasant than last year's, when the sluggish
economy meant job losses. While the economy
isn't recovered completely and the ramifi cations of
the Gulf oil spill are to be determined (see p. 14),
we're anticipating an upbeat mood for this summer's
Independent Show at Baltimore's Inner Harbor.
One thing that always makes this 5-year-old show upbeat is
the inclusion of spouses and children. This is a family activity and
gives The Independent Show a feel like no other cable trade show.
That custom predates The Independent Show by some 10 years. Since
many members ran family businesses, NCTC began including families (and
family activities) to increase attendance at its annual Members Meeting. Later,
then-NCTC chief Mike Pandzik urged staff to bring their families, too.
And so the story behind our picture above began.
A few weeks ago, on a sweltering June Sunday in the small town of
Sikeston, MO, Cori Garrett and James Mulvenon of Olathe, KS, took their
vows at her local church. The cable connection? They met as youngsters at
an NCTC Members Meeting. Living six hours apart, they renewed the friendship
each summer at the NCTC event and later The Independent Show. The
friendship eventually became a long-distance romance.
" They each attended the other's high school proms, " says Cori's dad, Ty
Garrett, who runs Sikeston-based cable operator Semo Communications and
is a former NCTC board member. James' father, veteran NCTC staffer Dan
Mulvenon, notes, " We didn't think it would last, especially when they decided to
attend the same college [MO State]. " Ty agrees, laughing, " We thought they'd
get sick of each other. " Despite their being wrong about that, we know of two
dads who will be beaming this week in Baltimore.
Will the newlyweds and new college grads continue to attend The Independent
Show? ACA COO Rob Shema
relays Dan Mulvenon's jesting answer:
" 'Sure-but they'll have to pay their
own way.' " Ah, family.
