You Say You Want
a Revolution
The cover of this year's magazine features Boston's magnificent bronze statue of
George Washington from sculptor Thomas Ball, an homage to the city that plays host to
this year's Independent Show. As I read the history of the monument, I was struck by
the challenges Ball faced. He worked single-handedly on it for four years, but his work
wasn't done. The statue couldn't be cast for several more years because of the Civil
War and bronze shortages. It wasn't unveiled in Boston Public Garden until 1869, four
years after the war ended.
That sort of persistence and dedication reminded me of the operators honored in this
issue. Be it fighting for retransmission consent reform, challenging Title II regulation,
pushing for a level playing field with online video distributors or making sure customers
have the best offerings available, cable operators keep plugging away at the issues
at hand while keeping an eye on bottom line.
And like the man on the horse, these operators are leaders on both a national and local
stage. As we discussed cover ideas for this year's magazine, we tossed around the
idea of a Boston Tea Party-themed cover. In the end, I think Washington was the right
choice. While cable has plenty to protest these days, with the potential of rate regulation
probably topping the list, it's not the industry's style to throw everything overboard.
Instead, look for cable to play a " founding father " role as the country navigates
the waters of a new video world-willing to battle when necessary, but also willing to
listen and negotiate.
They'll also jump in at a moment's notice. When ACA members visited D.C. in March
for the association's annual Summit, a few members were having coffee at Starbucks
when a woman yelled " Stop that guy! He has my purse. " That's when ACA member
Jerry Strasser from Armstrong and some colleagues jumped up and actually nabbed
the guy and the woman's purse.
Just another day in the life of a cable operator, fighting for every man! I hope you'll join
us October 1 in New York when we recognize the winners at our awards breakfast at
the Yale Club.
