Change Agents
As the team began to dig into this year's Multiscreen issue of Cablefax: The Magazine,
we thought a lot about what to highlight. After all, multiscreen encompasses so
much-countless devices, OTT and mobile plays, virtual reality, home automation
and so on. As everyone tries to come to terms with the whip-snap pace of change,
it seemed obvious this issue should celebrate those who actually create change as
opposed to merely react to it.
To quote Winston Churchill, " To improve is to change, so to be perfect is to have
changed often. " I won't go so far as to say our Most Innovative People in Multiscreen
are perfect, but they're out front taking risks and educated leaps as traditional and
new media try to give users the entertainment experience they want-even when
consumers aren't always sure what that is. I encourage you to really look through this
list. Some of the honorees are likely familiar, while others may be from companies
you haven't even heard of before. It's critical that as a stakeholder in this multiscreen
universe you keep up-to-date on key players and technologies.
Similarly, Cablefax's Screenster brand is celebrating change by highlighting our top
picks in the increasingly crowded SVOD universe. The fact that we even have an SVOD
assemblage is proof of the industry's willingness to embrace change. It wasn't that many
years ago that it was unheard of for a channel like TheBlaze TV to have both linear and
OTT carriage. It was just 2012 when consumers mounted their own campaign to urge
HBO to break out its programming into a standalone offering for those without cable. It
was " I Want My MTV " again, but on a whole new level with Twitter and even a dedicated
website rallying fans to push for a direct to consumer offering.
For an industry that's sometimes taken to task for not changing fast enough, it's worth
taking a step back and appreciating how far it really has come. That's what this magazine
is about. And in the end, we hope this issue helps ignite the change agent in you!
