Seeing Beyond
During a recent trip to the mall, the Microsoft Store was demonstrating Oculus Rift's
virtual reality headset. My children eagerly lined up behind a few young men, only to
fi nd out when it was their turn that they had to be at least 13 years old to try out the
tech. The salesman started to move on, when I piped up with, " I'm over 13. "
I signed the waiver and was soon rock climbing in an exotic locale.
It was such an immersive experience that I had no idea my
kids were behind me screaming (and mortifi ed) that some of
their teachers had walked by and saw my be-goggled self
awkwardly reaching for those tricky, virtual stone crevices.
" That was amazing, " I told the salesman.
And it's proof that stereotyping VR or any multiscreen
experience for a certain demo is way
off base. I've already been scheming
to get a pair so I can put them
on and block out my messy house
and family while for all intensive
legal purposes still being considered
" present. "
Thankfully, the multiscreen innovators on
these pages have a better grasp of the marketplace than
the young, male dominated VR kiosk at the mall. With the
growing number of OTT services and virtual MVPD offerings,
it seems the multiscreen universe has never been more
mainstream. Sling TV CEO Roger Lynch recently received a
letter from an 85-year-old customer of the streaming video
service. This is your grandfather's OTT and your teenager's.
Now that the momentum has built, strong leaders are needed to help
guide consumers to the next step of the multiscreen
plane, while still making the environment welcoming to latearrivals.
There are still a lot of questions to be answered about
how the business models will shake out, when measurement
will catch up and how latency will be impacted, but some of the
sharpest minds are on the case. With this issue, we honor those
who are taking us to places we never thought we'd go-even
virtual cliffs in a suburban mall.
