Every year we take a moment to mark those major players who have graduated beyond The Cablefax 100. They are the moguls who are often household names. Their
influence can be felt throughout the industry, hence our declaration that they rise Above it All. Caps off to them.
Chase Carey (21st CENTURY FOX))
Carey remains at 21st Century Fox following a shakeup
that saw James Murdoch move into the CEO spot.
But how much longer he stays there as executive vice
chairman is being questioned, with speculation that he
may head to Disney following Thomas Staggs' surprise
departure.
Philippe Dauman (VIACOM)
Viacom has a tough row to hoe, but its garden is still
producing blooms under Dauman. His most recent
accomplishments include successfully negotiating a
renewal with DISH without any channels going dark. The
past year saw him step into the chairmanship at Viacom
following Sumner Redstone's resignation.
Charles & James Dolan (CABLEVISION)
We're going to miss the Dolans assuming French
telecom giant Altice is successful in its $17.7 billion
acquisition of the company. The family team has always
positioned Cablevision as an innovator-be it through
offering massive WiFi before anyone else or through
new packaging, including becoming the first MSO to ink
a deal for HBO Now.
Charles Ergen (DISH/ECHOSTAR)
It's fun to have Ergen back in the CEO seat, giving his
frank assessment of DISH's accomplishments and
failures during quarterly earnings calls. Whether it's
threatening Viacom channels or expanding Sling TV
into a multi-stream offering, he always keeps things
interesting.
Randy Falco (UNIVISION)
This trailblazer has transformed Univision since joining
in 2011. In the past 12 months he has further increased
focus on the company's strategy to deliver a Univision
branded experience everywhere-stepping up efforts
in digital and music. He has also led Univision to initiate
a broadband access and education campaign to close
the digital gap.
John Hendricks (DISCOVERY/CURIOSITYSTREAM)
He may not be chairman of Discovery Communications
anymore, but his legacy lives on (just note the number
of Cablefax 100 execs who list him as a mentor). His
OTT offering CuriosityStream continues to gain momentum
and earn praise. It is now being offered on a global
basis, and just scored distribution via the Apple TV app.
Given his reputation, plenty are curious what's next.
Bob Iger (DISNEY)
One of Hollywood's favorite parlor games is guessing
who will replace Iger, and Thomas Staggs surprise
departure let's everyone start a new round. The wellregarded
executive has already delayed his planned
retirement until June 2018. Will he extend it even
further?
James Cox Kennedy (COX)
The grandson of former Ohio Governor and presidential
candidate James M. Cox has made sure to keep his
family's value front and center at Cox Enterprises,
which includes Cox Communications and Cox Automotive.
In addition to increasing annual revenue to $18
billion from $2.1 billion, Kennedy is a well-regarded
