Greg Maffei (LIBERTY MEDIA)
Like Liberty, Maffei has a hand in everything. Whether its
assuring people that the company is happy with its ownership
of MLB's Atlanta Braves or informing Wall Street
that it's overreacting to cord-cutting fears, he's there. His
skills and respect in the industry are top notch.
John Malone (LIBERTY MEDIA)
Any time the good doctor speaks, it makes a headline.
And for good reason. He's built an empire of diverse
businesses with a successful track record. He also has
amassed quite a lot of land, with his 2.2 million acres
making him the largest individual landowner in the
United States.
Lowell McAdam (VERIZON)
He zigs when everyone else zags. McAdam surprised
many with Verizon's purchase of AOL last year. Now
he's got his eyes on Yahoo. While the deal may seem
puzzling to some, there's no doubt that McAdam sees
something there, particularly in the digital ad space. All
eyes will be on him to see if he can bring it to life.
Les Moonves (SHOWTIME/CBS)
Moonves shoots from the hip, be it on retrans or the
presidential election that he described as a profitable
" circus. " While the CBS broadcast station gets the
most attention, he's built am impressive array of cable
networks. And with Sumner Redstone's resignation,
he's now chairman of CBS.
Rupert Murdoch (NEWS CORP/21st CENTURY
FOX)
While the legend made way last year for his sons
to lead 21st Century Fox, he hasn't faded from the
spotlight. And we're not just talking about his marriage
to Jerry Hall. Murdoch's business acumen and life is
the stuff for the history books. Don't forget he's still
executive chairman at 21st Century Fox, no doubt
exerting his influence.
Peter Rice (21st CENTURY FOX)
He supervises the whole enchilada when it comes to Fox
Networks Group-from top-rated Fox Broadcasting to
FX Networks and the revered Fox Sports Media Group.
He's helped the Fox Networks build a reputation for
pushing boundaries. We're waiting to see what's next.
Brian Roberts (COMCAST)
Roberts just plays on a different field, evidenced by
Comcast's $3.8 billion purchase of DreamWorks as we
were going to print. He has helped build a company so
behemoth that nothing is out of its range-well, except
Time Warner Cable. Expect major synergy and integration
between brands.
Randall Stephenson (AT&T)
With the DirecTV acquisition behind him and integration
well underway, Stephenson's the face of the new AT&T.
So far the deal is paying off, with AT&T customers
making the switch to DirecTV. Then there's the coming
OTT play. He will keep busy getting the most out of his
new assets.
Oprah Winfrey (OWN)
While recent headlines have focused on her $43 million
stake in Weight Watchers (and her own participation
in the program), the queen of all media is still one
of cable's most influential leaders. She is the network's
trusted face, serving as host of " SuperSoul Sunday "
and conducting one-on-one interviews. Under Winfrey's
leadership, OWN became one of only two ad-supported
cable networks to achieve double-digit prime growth in
total viewers in each of the past four years.
