More of the Most Powerful Women in Cable 2011
Runway, " Hetzel puts her passion for fashion
to work through supporting Oregon's Dress for
Success program, which promotes economic independence
through providing professional attire
and career development tools.
Dale Hopkins
EVP, Affiliate Distribution, GSN
Game on! Hopkins rose to
the post of EVP, affiliate distribution,
earlier this year after
joining GSN as marketing
head in 2009. Prior to joining
GSN, Hopkins left a long stint at Comcast-
where she most recently ran G4-to take a post
as CEO of the Championship Gaming Series.
Known as a straight-shooter and an innovative
thinker, Hopkins is relishing her new role at the
75 million-subscriber DirecTV-Sony venture as it
grows its platform of original and classic games
and platform of competitive entertainment.
Kiera Hynninen
EVP, Marketing, Nat Geo Channel
and Nat Geo Wild
Hynninen has played no
small part in Nat Geo Channel's
strong ratings and
revenue. Another feat: the
launch of two new networks: Nat Geo Wild and
Nat Geo Mundo. She also has an adventurous
spirit. " Jumping off cliffs, helicopter rides and
hikes, where no one seems to have gone, is
what adds excitement and craziness to the trip.
For me, adventure travel opens up my mind to
new ideas, re-energizes me, and allows me to
really appreciate what I have in life. "
Liz Janneman
EVP, Advertising Sales, Ovation
With Janneman at the helm,
Ovation tripled its ad revenue
year over year and landed
20 new advertisers-as
additions, not replacements.
Still, she says it's a tough road. " We do not have
multiple networks to leverage and bundle in any
aspect of our business. However, despite these
issues we have grown our distribution, grown our
ad sales and grown our ratings to record levels. "
Brown Johnson
President, Animation,
Nickelodeon/MTVN Kids and
Family Group
Johnson is responsible for
development and production
of Nick's animated and
preschool programming. With her leadership,
preschool shows like " Dora the Explorer " and
" The Backyardigans " have become hits, and
32
cablefaxmag.com
she continues to expand the net's lineup with
successes. For instance, Nick Jr. has enjoyed
double-digit ratings growth thanks to her vision.
How does she do it? What's imperative, she
says, is " maintaining a safe, inspirational home
for creative thinking, while excelling in business. "
Loretha Jones
President, Original
Programming, BET Networks
With Jones paving the way,
BET's scripted programming
has really taken off. Some of
her accomplishments include
brokering the deal to bring ratings record-breaker
" The Game " to the network and securing the
show's new season, which includes the original
actors. When she's not at work, she's still doing
research. " I am constantly reading and watching
TV, and I am also very interested in science-
particularly learning more about public health
issues that impact underserved communities. "
Tana Jamieson
SVP, Drama Programming, AETN
In the past year, Jamieson
has raised the bar at AETN.
Thanks to her foresight,
the net acquired " Breakout
Kings, " whose pilot was
originally developed for Fox. The show became,
along with " The Glades, " among the most successful
scripted series in the network's history.
When not at work, her 11-year-old triplets and
their rock'n'roll band keep her busy. " This year
they played at several fundraisers and wrote
a surprisingly inspiring song about children in
Africa. I've got it as my ringtone! "
Kate Juergens
EVP, Programming &
Development, ABC Family
With Juergens' help, ABC
Family's slate keeps growing.
Take hits from this year, like
" Switched at Birth " and " The
Nine Lives of Chloe King. " To make that happen,
she's also a liaison with A-listers, show runners
and the agent community. Pairing quality with affordability
is " a pretty constant source of anxiety, "
she says. " The delicate balancing act of supporting
a creative vision and running a business is
often... let's say, interesting! "
Superna Kalle
GM, Sony Movie Channel/SVP,
Networks, Sony Pictures Television
Kalle oversees Sony
Movie Channel, launched
in October 2010, as well
as GSN, FEARnet and
November 2011
3net. She's increased viewership by healthy
margins with two SMC programming blocks
and helped the channel win two PROMAX
awards. Her efforts show results, despite the
ever-present obstacle of " securing distribution
for our independent channels, amidst an
ever-changing landscape. " Work aside, Kalle
is a cinema buff. She sits on the board of
directors for the Indian Film Festival, whose
programs help emerging indie filmmakers.
Her duties include fundraising and identifying
the fest's award winners.
Nancy Kanter
SVP, Original Programming/GM,
Disney Junior Worldwide, The
Walt Disney Co.
Kanter leads development
and production of content
for the newly launched
Disney Junior both in the U.S. and abroad.
She also oversees strategic direction for the
multiplatform brand on TV, digital and radio
platforms-with a 14% rise in daypart ratings
since last year. Kanter continually challenges
herself to stay ahead of the curve. " Kids television
has become more and more competitive.
Kids are smarter and smarter, and we have
to keep pace, " she says. This knowledge will
help Kanter as she oversees Disney Junior's
move to a 24-hour network in 2012.
Michelle Kim
Group VP/General Counsel,
Programming, Time Warner Cable
Kim is responsible for all
legal matters related to programming
across TWC's
distribution platforms,
and she plays a key role in drafting carriage
agreements. Known for her ability to be tenacious,
nimble and read between the lines,
she's as enthusiastic about embracing technology
and its ability to propel TWC forward
as she is adept at negotiating retransmission
consent deals-the latter of which has kept
her plenty busy of late. Her greatest challenge?
" Finding the sweet spot between risk
and innovation when advising the company
on new products, services and implementation
of technologies " to enrich customer
viewing experiences, she says.
Suzanne Kolb
President, E! Entertainment
Named president of E!
Entertainment in July 2011,
Kolb oversees the network's
ongoing growth and development.
In her previous role as
president of marketing, news and online for E!
