LEND A HAND
As Cablefax: The Magazine's Most Powerful Women issue was coming
together, my 10-year-old daughter's Discovery Girls magazine
arrived in the mail. As a print junkie, I naturally thumbed through it
and was struck by a special feature on women in the workplace. It
was a timeline, starting in the 1920s, when just nine percent of married
women worked outside the home (mostly as domestic servants),
to today, where women fi ll almost half of all jobs, but still aren't in the
C-suites in high numbers.
One of the things that struck me in the piece was the description for the
1990s, the decade in which I entered the workforce. It noted that while
38% of managers are women, " they are afraid to help other women-so
women become obstacles to their own success. " Yikes. There was no
attribution for this little nugget, so I can't offer any comment on its veracity.
But looking at this year's Most Powerful Women honorees, I can tell
you that I just don't see that to be the case among these executives.
So many of these honorees talk about the importance of mentoring
others-not only within the industry, but several work with young
girls, like my daughter, to make sure they have excellent role models.
In fact, the industry has long been toiling to fi ll the pipeline with strong
female leaders, establishing WICT in 1979.
Madeleine Albright is oft quoted as saying there is " a special place in
hell for women who don't help other women. " With a growing number
of employee resource groups and affi nity groups, the continued
support of WICT and the Betsy Magness Leadership Institute and-
according to the latest WICT and NAMIC studies-more than 40% of
responding organizations having staff members dedicated to diversity
and inclusion, cable seems to be on the road to heaven.
Yes, there's still work to be done-the proportion of women who are
full-time employees dipped one percent in the WICT/NAMIC survey
compared to 2013-but there's also plenty to celebrate. The study
found women are being recruited at higher rates than men in the
industry and are being promoted at near equal or higher rates. And
females in executive and senior-level management roles averaged
32 percent, signifi cantly higher than the comparable
national benchmark of 26 percent.
No doubt, many of these advancements can be attributed
to women helping women-many of whom are
honored between these pages. I hope you'll join me Nov.
20 for breakfast at New York City's Edison Ballroom,
where we will salute this year's Most Powerful women
who have left a mark for the better on the industry.
