SPE, IO-Link and Sensor-to-Cloud
Single Pair Ethernet (SPE) offers considerable advantages
Jumo is on a dynamic-development path towards becoming a leading system and solution provider for
industrial sensor and automation technology. This change is clearly demonstrated by the integration
and networking of modern technologies, such as Single Pair Ethernet (SPE), IO-Link and sensor-tocloud
communication in the Jumo system world.
SPE is a pioneering development
in the world of industrial
communication technologies.
Originally developed in the
automotive industry, SPE offers
considerable advantages for industrial
automation. It uses
only a single wire pair for data
transmission, which enables a
leaner, less-expensive and
simpler infrastructure, while
maintaining high data transmission
rates. SPE supports
data rates of up to 1 Gbit/s with
a line length of 40 m and enables
consistent data transmission
right down to the field
level. Jumo uses the 10BASET1L
standard with a lower, but
still perfectly adequate, data
transmission rate of 10 Mbit/s.
A line length of up to 1,000 m
can be achieved.
The advantages of SPE include
space and weight savings, easier
installation, cost savings,
longer range, faster data transmission,
and integrated power
supply via PoDL. These features
make SPE ideal for networking
in the context of the industrial
internet of things (IIoT) and Industry
4.0, as it meets the
requirements for ever greater
networking of devices and
data-driven decision-making.
Importance of IO Link
IO-Link is a communication
technology that has been part
of Jumo's product portfolio for
many years. It ensures seamless
communication between sensors,
actuators and the control
system. As the first standardized
IO technology for communication
with sensors and
actuators, IO-Link enables bidirectional,
digital point-to-point
industrial network logging.
The key features of IO-Link include
bidirectional communication,
device parameterization,
comprehensive diagnostic
capabilities and flexibility
in supporting a wide range
of intelligent Jumo devices. IOLink
also plays a central role in
the implementation of smart
manufacturing and the fourth
industrial revolution by providing
an intelligent solution for
optimizing production processes
and improving production
efficiency as well as occupational
safety.
Machine-to-machine (M2M)
communication is also a key element
of Industry 4.0. It refers
to the automated exchange of
data between machines, systems,
and devices, often via a
network, without human intervention.
This communication
enables machines to exchange
information, coordinate tasks,
and make decisions based on
real-time data.
M2M-communication refers to
the direct exchange of data
between devices, machines,
sensors, and control systems
such as the Jumo variTRON
500. This communication
usually takes place via wireless
or wired networks and is a
central component of automation
and monitoring systems
in various industries.
The concept is closely linked to
IoT, where the focus is on interaction
between machines. SPE
and IO-Link play a decisive role
in M2M communication. SPE
enables the fast and efficient
transmission of large amounts
of data via a single wire pair,
which can be a great benefit in
complex automation environments.
By integrating SPE, machines
and sensors can communicate
over greater distances
and transmit data more
efficiently. IO-Link technology
scores points by providing a robust
and flexible platform for
the exchange of sensor data
and control signals.
The bidirectional communication
capability of IO-Link enables
detailed diagnostics and
real-time feedback from sensors
and actuators, which is essential

monitoring in M2M networks.

Importance of M2M
M2M communication is used
in many areas in which Industry
4.0 is applied, one of which
is production automation. This
is where M2M enables precise
control and monitoring of production
processes. Machines
can exchange status data and
adapt processes based on realtime
information. Another
point is predictive maintenance,
which enables constant
monitoring of device statuses
and triggers preventive maintenance
measures before
faults occur. Energy management
within M2M technology
can be used to monitor and
control energy consumption to
increase efficiency and reduce
costs. In this context, logistics
and supply chain management
enable improved tracking and
management of warehouse
stocks, as well as means of
transportation.
Not only M2M communication,
but also sensor-to-cloud technologies
play a decisive role in
the digital transformation of
industrial automation. They
enable sensor data to be transferred
directly to the cloud,
where it can be used for analysis,
decision-making and process
improvements. This development
is a central component
of Industry 4.0 and IIoT.
At Jumo, sensor-to-cloud refers
to the connection of smart
sensors in industrial environments
directly to the Jumo
Cloud. This connection allows
data from production processes
to be acquired efficiently
and converted into usable
information. Smart sensors

they can send data directly to
the cloud without the need for
additional components. This
direct data flow enables production
data to be used quickly
and efficiently, which increases

expands sensor-to-cloud

SPE in combination with
the JUMO Cloud gateway that
is integrated in the sensor implements
a robust and efficient
connection between information
technology (IT) and
the operation technology (OT)
world. If the connection to the
cloud server is lost, data is buffered
in the smart sensor and
an alarm is triggered.
