Molecular Recycling Facility for Polyester Waste

bound for a landfill or incineration
facility.
The company says its technology
allows this plastic waste to
be broken down into its molecular
building blocks and then
reassembled to become virginquality
material that does not
require any compromises in
plastic performance. Eastman
is enabling the potentially infinite
use of materials by
keeping valuable molecules
from plastic waste in production,
in a material-to-material,
high-yield loop.
Eastman's polyester recycling facility
This March, the global specialty
materials company Eastman
Chemical Co. (Kingsport, Tenn.,
USA; www.eastman.com) announced
it achieved on-specification
initial production from
its new molecular recycling facility
for polyester waste in
Tennessee, and is now generating
revenue from the plant.
Eastman's technology can
transform waste plastic into
virgin-quality food contact
polyesters with lower greenhouse
gas emissions than traditional
methods.
The company expects to ramp
up production of the new recycling
facility over the coming
months and anticipates growth
across a wide range of markets.
The company expects that the
plant will deliver approximately
$75 million in EBITDA (earnings
before taxes, depreciation and
amortization) in 2024 and
build momentum for its circular
economy platform.

Eastman's proven polyester
A second facility in Texas
Also in March 2024, Eastman
named Longview, Texas as the
location for a second molecular-recycling
facility, and announced
that the project was
selected by the U.S. Department
of Energy (DOE; Washington,
D.C.; www.energy.gov)
as one of 33 companies for
award negotiations. The DOE
support comes under the
DOE's Industrial Demonstration
Program (IDP), which is inteneded
to accelerate decarbonization
projects in energyintensive
industries.
The company selected the
Longview site due to synergies
with existing infrastructure and
operations, favorable energy
supply and footprint, and access
to western- and centralU.S.
feedstock pools. The location
also provides enough
space for onsite renewable
energy. Recent investments in
the second recycling facility include
those supporting operations
that will prepare mixed
plastic waste for processing, as
well as Eastman's next-generation
molecular recycling unit
to depolymerize waste, and a
polymer facility to create virgin-quality
materials for packaging
and textiles. The Longview
molecular recycling facility
will have the capacity to recycle
approximately 110,000
metric tons of hard-to-recycle
plastic waste, Eastman says.
Future deployment
The company plans another recycling
facility in France.
Reaching a collaborative
agreement with the DOE enables
expanding the project to
include the deployment of
thermal heat batteries and onsite
solar power. This, combined
with Eastman's nextgeneration
methanolysis technology,
achieves a step-change
improvement in decarbonizing
PET production.
