High Capacity Pastillation Systems
for Oleochemicals
O
leochemicals such as fatty alcohols,
fatty acids, and PEG (polyethyleneglycol)
are widely used in food and cosmetic
products, sectors noted for the need for the
highest standards of hygiene. As these base
chemicals are usually converted into a solid
form ahead of production for ease of handling
and dosing, this means that upstream
solidification must meet similar standards.
IPCO is the world's leading supplier of
solidification solutions for oleochemicals. Its
Rotoform system can be used in production
lines requiring Good Manufacturing Practice
(GMP) compliance and provides a highly efficient
way of converting chemicals into freeflowing
pastilles, directly from the melt.
For oleochemicals, typical pastille size is
4-6 mm dia. And bulk density of solid product
can be as high as 500kg/m3.
Rotoform can also be used to deliver high
capacity solutions, including the world's largest
pastillation system. Installed in India,
the line is 48 m long (45 m cooling zone) and
features a 2 m wide stainless steel cooling
belt with automatic tracking, delivering a
pastillation capacity of up to 3.5 t/h.
This is particularly
impressive
given
the difficultto-solidify
nature
of certain
oleochemicals.
The main chalRotoform
pastillation
of oleochemicals
lenge is the heat of fusion released as the
product changes state from liquid melt to
solid form; typically around 200 kJ/kgK.
In the Rotoform process, this heat is
transferred from the product in a highly efficient
way - via the steel belt - to cooling
water sprayed onto the underside of the
belt. The system acts as a heat exchanger;
the larger the exchange surface, the more
heat can be transferred.
This challenge is further compounded
in hot, humid regions like India (and South
East Asia, where a second large system will
be installed this year). The use of chilled
water results in condensation, but IPCO is
able to overcome this with the superimposition
of dry air.

The working horse in drying -
contact dryers
Buss-SMS-Canzler's contact dryers
olutions, suspensions, slurries, pastes,
filter cakes and moist granules are all
typical feed materials to be dried. BussSMS-Canzler
recommends contact drying
with direct heat transfer through contact
of the product with the heating surface for
all these feed materials. Contact dryers can
be operated under vacuum and therefore
allow low temperature processing. Because
of these and other advantages SMS offers
several dryer types which allow the effective
drying of substances like salt solutions,
sewage sludge, and tar sludges from different
industries.
The vertical thin film dryer consists of a
vertical cylindrical body with heating jacket.
A rotor inside the body is equipped with
rows of pendulum blades. The wet feed is
spread by the pendulum blades in a thin
layer onto the wall. Because of the very effective
heat transfer the feed can be processed
from liquid to solid in one step.
Horizontal thin film dryers operate according
to a very similar principle but are

equipped
with a
different
rotor
configuration.
Like in the vertical thin film dryer, the
product hold-up is very little and feed products
like sewage sludge, chemical products,
pharmaceutical ingredients and high-value
proteins can be dried advantageously.
Some products cannot be handled with
conventional drying technology because
they undergo multiple changes of their
state from liquid through pasty, sticky,
crust-forming and finally to solid state. Such
materials like paint and tar sludges can
be dried successfully with the Combined
Fluidisation Technology (CFT) dryer.
Optimal choice of drying technology as
well as design of a dryer in some cases need
tests but at least some experience with the
product to be dried. SMS offers test facilities
and plenty of experience.

he drying of highly active and toxic substances
in test centers, laboratories and
production calls for protective measures for
the operator as well as the product.
To ensure the best protection for both
and for the safe handling of HAPIs, PINK has
combined its vacuum drying oven type VSD
with an isolator and mobile pressure nutsch.
The developed system type VSDIN is ideal
for drying
these
substances.
Due
to its construction
concept,
the
drying
oven VSD
offers an
ideal basis
for GMPprocesses
and
for extremely pure and contaminationfree
terms for producing sensible and even
high toxic products. The interior has rounded
edges with no jointings and no hidden surfaces.
All surfaces are visually controllable
for the operator. The heated shelves as well
as the top and the bottom are constructed
double-walled and are connected to the side
walls absolutely jointless.
The integrated isolator is equipped with
ergonomic arranged gloves for safe handling
of the product. The inside is also designed
according to GMP. A CIP-device as well as
spray guns grant a proper cleaning in order
to avoid any cross contamination.
For applications in which the filling and
filtration of the product takes place outside
the isolator, PINK offers a mobile pressure
nutsch for contamination-free docking. This
enables the prefiltration of liquid products
before the drying process proper, thus optimizing
work processes.
The GMP-compliant system VSDIN features
a main and lock chamber, RTPs for
product infeed and discharge, an integrated
vacuum drying oven VSD as well as a weighing
system and sieve mills.
The operator and the product are protected
at all times, no cross-contamination, no
product loss.
