New Smart Elbow Deflection Elbow
Kits (photo) allow direct replacement
of silo top elbows and piping or tubing
that is subject to abrasive wear,
with all preparation done safely at
ground level. Each kit contains all
components required to replace failing
elbows, including two Smart
Elbow deflection elbows and all necessary
piping or tubing, connectors
and gaskets. All can be assembled
on the plant floor prior to silo-top installation,
reducing personnel hazards
associated with maintenance at high
elevations in all weather conditions.
Silo-top sweep elbows are prone to
failure due to large volumes of conveyed
material impacting the elbow
wall at high speed to change direction,
causing abrasive materials to
wear through the elbow wall, resulting
in blow-outs and lost production
due to downtime. The Smart Elbow
design features a spherical chamber
that protrudes partially beyond the
90-deg flow path, causing a loose ball
of airborne material to rotate in the
same direction as the airstream that
powers it, gently deflecting incoming
material around the bend without impacting
the elbow wall. In addition to
preventing elbow wear and failure, the
design reportedly precludes friable
materials from degrading and dusting,
plastics from melting and forming
streamers, and heat-sensitive materials
from building up and plugging,
while
reducing pressure drop and

Two styles of hose clamps
offered here
This company offers two types of hose
clamp - worm-gear clamps (photo,
top) or T-bolt clamps. The worm-gear
clamps (photo, bottom) are available
with 201 stainless-steel bands and
housing and in a full range of sizes.
Screws are available in 401 stainless
steel or zinc-plated carbon steel. The Tbolt
clamps are made from 304 stainless
steel, and are suitable for hightorque
applications. These clamps
provide 360 deg of sealing surface,
and have a band width of 0.75 in. A
stainless-steel bolt with silver-plated

Making high-quality pipes from
hard-to-recycle plastic waste
Together with Neste, Wastewise and
Borealis, this company has successfully
produced pipes made of crosslinked
polyethylene (PEX; photo),
which
was
based
on
gained from chemically recycled,
post-industrial waste plastic from
PEX pipe production, using an ISCC
PLUS certified mass-balancing approach.
The partner companies believe
this project is among the first implementations
of chemical recycling
of PEX. PEX pipes are an important
contributor to energy-efficient heating
and safe plumbing due to their
robustness, temperature resistance
and longevity, yet the interconnected
polymer chains make them nearly impossible
to recycle with conventional
recycling technologies. The cooperation
sees Wastewise use their novel
pyrolysis-based
chemical recycling
technology to liquefy industrial waste
from Uponor's PEX pipe production,
breaking the polymers down back
into their building blocks, which creates
an oil-like recycled intermediate.
This liquid is then co-processed in
Neste's oil refinery in Porvoo, Finland
and upgraded into recycled Neste
RE, a high-quality drop-in feedstock
for the production of new polymers.
Borealis is feeding this raw material
into its steam cracker and consequently
polymerizing it into PE as part
of its Borcycle C chemical recycling
portfolio. Finally, Uponor is using the
PE to create new PEX pipe systems.
