both departments work toward shared
goals and objectives. "
Turning your workplace into a
WOWplace®
A workplace is where employees have
to go because they need a paycheck,
but a WOWplace is where employees
want to go because they make a difference.
That was the message from
Sandy Geroux, MS, founder and chief
executive officer for WOWplace International,
LLC, Orlando, Florida.
She said workplace culture boils
down to how people treat our patients,
how we treat our people, and how our
people treat each other.
In a culture where WOW flourishes,
people commit on a deeper level and
feel that what they do has meaning.
Geroux gave five rules for a WOWplace,
noting that consistency is key.
A WOWplace is safe. " Are our employees
trying to succeed, or are they
just trying not to fail? " Geroux asked.
" There's a big difference. " Employees
need to know that it's acceptable to
take reasonable and appropriate risks.
They also need to be encouraged to
share what they know.
Geroux said leaders should ask
their staff, " What is it that you need
to do your job better? What can I do to
serve you? "
A WOWplace is respectful. " WOW
leaders don't demand respect,
they
command it, " Geroux says. " Respect
is earned every day. " Respect depends
on three principles of organizational
justice:
* procedural: relates to fairness with
policies and procedures, as well as
the ability to offer input
* interpersonal: relates to treatment

by a superior, especially during the
feedback process
* informational: relates to the quality
and clarity of explanations.
A WOWplace is human...not humanoid.
" Don't treat people like robots, "
Geroux said. That doesn't mean leaders
should become friends with employees,
but rather, simply be friendly
and show they care.
A WOWplace is innovative, creative,
and fun. " Complacency is a dangerous
place to live, " Geroux said. She
advised leaders to question the status
quo, asking, " Does it have to be this
way? "
Then determine how to eliminate
excuses for not making change. " The
'impossible' is only impossible until
someone comes along and says that it
isn't, " Geroux said.
To encourage fun, she suggested
leaders keep a humor file and have
a " fun " committee. " Don't leave it
to chance, " she said. " Nothing will
change unless you focus on it. "
A WOWplace is rewarding. " A paycheck
can't be the only reward we
offer [employees,] " Geroux said. She
provided several ideas for rewards.
Formal rewards include performance
reviews, which, she noted, should
occur more than annually. Informal rewards
involve instant recognition such
as a " pat on the back " or surprise
treats. Leaders might also send thank
you notes to the employee's family and
ask the family to give the note to the
employee. Team rewards are tied to
performance and profits, and can be
linked to friendly competition.
Geroux also suggested engaging
employees through community projects
of their choice. " Millennials are
very altruistic and community oriented, "
she said.
