OR Business Management Conference
During the Build-a-Wheelchair® networking event, sponsored by Getinge, teams assembled, tested, and decorated wheelchairs
for donation to American veterans. Participants tapped into a whole new set of skills while getting to know their fellow
business leaders.
Borrowing best practices
In response to feedback from past attendees,
this year's program included
numerous presentations outside the traditional
business areas of finance/analytics/efficiencies.
Clinical and managerial
aspects of patient care also influence
any business leader's success, and attendees
found value in sessions on:
* how to reduce perioperative pressure
injuries
* the benefits of eliminating tray errors
* transitioning from high-level disinfection
to sterilization
* how to improve quality measures
and diagnostics
* understanding quality, safety, and
the patient experience
* using a patient-friendly scheduling
system to improve efficiency and the
patient experience
* leveraging understanding of social
styles to build effective teams
* ensuring safe sterilization in the
wake of an emergency.
The main focus of the conference,
however, continues to be best business
practices that have led to significant
cost savings or increased efficiencies.
Take-home tools-whether guidelines,
fact sheets, spreadsheets, or some

program committee looks for these
when selecting conference speakers.

and cocktails created just the right ambiance for
informal networking, a hallmark of the OR Business
Management Conference.
* Increasing productivity: " The speaker
was transparent and refreshing. He
faced some major issues that so
many of face, and he did not allow
the issues to paralyze him. He obtained
support and has started moving
his department to one with respect
versus one that was extremely
dysfunctional. "
* Reducing turnover times: " Very engaging
presentation. The toolkit for
surviving turnover was a great touch.
Engaging staff and getting physician
buy-in is so important. I hope to use
the engagement strategy presented
in my organization. "
* Increasing supply documentation:
" The presentation was a process
improvement project that was successful.
The success and barriers
faced were shared, which could help
attendees to set up a successful
process improvement project and
potentially avoid barriers. "
* Sharing equipment: " This was the
most innovative and exciting idea
brought forward at the conference
this year. I think this is the type of
thinking we need more of at the
hospital system level. "
