The OR Manager Conference, an essential

These information-rich networking
experiences are particularly important in
2020, which has been designated the
" Year of the Nurse. "
What the numbers show
Recent survey results suggest a major
transformation is occurring in the nurse
workforce. AMN Healthcare, a consulting
firm headquartered in San Diego,
polled almost 20,000 RNs nationwide.
The survey found that 86% of Baby
Boomer nurses will retire within the next
5 years, and of those, 39% will be gone
within the next year.
Survey respondents put flexibility and
work-life balance slightly ahead of compensation
and benefits as the most
compelling reason to stay with their
current organizations (39% and 31%,
respectively).
The survey also highlighted the importance
of diversity. Of the 60% of
nurses who said their organizations are
very supportive of diversity, 43% said
they are very satisfied with their jobs-
versus just 5% of respondents whose
organizations do not support diversity
well at all.
And although 65% of respondents
overall reported job satisfaction, 66%
admitted to worrying that those jobs are
affecting their health. A total of 41%, in
fact, said they have been victims of bullying,
incivility, or other forms of workplace
violence.
The common thread in these responses,
I believe, is the emphasis on
humanity-the recognition that good
health and positive relationships contribute
to job satisfaction and play an important
role in patient and staff safety.
Leadership pearls
Recent articles in Becker's newsletters
support this idea. Ashley Schmidt, president
of Women in Healthcare, identified
a three-pronged approach to success in
healthcare leadership:
* create a diverse team of men and
women
* build relationships, develop others,
and develop yourself
