less than 18% female, " Schmidt told
Becker's. Her organization is devoted to
promoting the development of women
leaders in the healthcare industry.
The gender imbalance is a challenge
addressed in a separate interview
with Kerri Ubaldi, MBA, RN, CPHRM,
vice president of operations for Merritt
Healthcare, which provides consulting
services for ambulatory surgery centers.
Ubaldi, who has 22 years of experience
in the OR, has had to adjust to being
" sometimes the only woman at the
table " -but notes that her nursing background
allows her to bring a different
perspective to business discussions.
" I have worked to drive home that
safety needs to be taken into account, "
Ubaldi told Becker's. " We never sacrifice
quality of care or patient safety to
increase the profits of our centers. "
Ubaldi also cited the importance of
leading by example and empowering
staff to make decisions. " What leaders
need to know early on is the importance
of earning trust and respect of not only
the people you report to, but the people
who report to you, " she said.
Trust and respect are at the root
of the professionalism so eloquently
explained by David A. Wyatt, PhD, RN,
NEA-BC, CNOR (cover story). Wyatt, who
assumes the role of AORN president
on April 1, defines professionalism
as " keeping your word, doing the right
thing even if it means taking a harder
road, and being disciplined. "
