idely known for her research
on laser technology and for
her legislative work advocating
for smoke evacuation in the OR,
Kay Ball, PhD, RN, CNOR, CMLSO,
FAAN, a perioperative consultant and
adjunct professor at Otterbein University
in Westerville, Ohio, sat down with
OR Manager to discuss the role of education
and mentorship in leadership.
Ball received her Bachelor of Science
in Nursing degree from Otterbein
in 1983 and her PhD in Health Related
Sciences from Virginia Commonwealth

A team approach to reducing instrumentation,
costs during the age of COVID-19
O
Rs rebounding from the financial
impact
of COVID-19 are
looking for ways to reduce expenses.
With rising costs coming from
all angles of the economy, some have
adopted systemwide processes to reduce,
streamline, and improve surgical
instrumentation sets.
Two major health systems, the
Cleveland Clinic and Thomas Jefferson
University Hospital in Center City, Philadelphia,
found a way to engage their
staff, examine trays and instruments
at the ground level, and implement
changes to reduce tray load. Representatives
for both health systems reported
their successes at the 2021 OR
Manager conference (ORMC 2021) and
provided updates to OR Manager for
this article.
Even before COVID-19 was a household
name, Cleveland Clinic in 2019
set its tray standardization strategy into
motion, implementing campus-wide
changes across its 11 affiliated hospitals.
The strategy impacted its ORs,
research and education departments,
family health centers, capital allocation,
block strategy, and supply chain. The
result: a new strategy that led to $5 million
in cost avoidances.
