that the generic industry had strong
contingency plans in place to fight these
challenges, " he said.
According to Kimball, generic brand
companies learned how to manage their
supply diversity from previous disruptions
caused by international unrest
and past natural disasters. " These contingency
plans and stock piles were
instrumental in ensuring the continuity
of supply, " he said, adding that since
the pandemic started, " these plans
have strengthened even more with companies
demanding greater certainty in
their own supply chains and extending
the volume of their own stock piles. "
" What we need to change going forward
as we prepare for the next pandemic,
or the next healthcare crisis, is
how the US healthcare system values
essential medicines, " Kimball continued.
" One of the things we as an industry
are doing better is, we now have
leaders of supply chain coming together
to talk about the key policy issues we
are facing. We have greater coordination
around policy challenges as well as
solutions we can work on. "
Dr Philip agrees; just stocking up
extra drugs in the basement will not suffice.
" These are systematic problems,
and what they need are system-wide
answers, " she says. " If we can predict
that something's going to be in shortage,
we need to be able to prepare
alternative sources, alternative drugs,
and targeted use of whatever supply we
have. "
That type of system-wide response
requires coordination and collaboration
across multiple agencies, she adds.
" ASA has been successfully advocating
for real legislation on drug shortages
to be improved. ASA's been partnering
with other major actors, particularly
the American Society of Health-System
Pharmacists and the FDA, to highlight
these faults to the government. We
need to help the government develop

legislative and regulatory assets to ensure
that the US has safe access to
high-quality medicines because it is a
matter of national security, " she says.

Cost savings is a theme of this month's
issue. With the financial strains hospitals
and health systems have been
under because of the aforementioned
inflation and rising costs associated
with these disruptions and shortages,
facilities are desperate to find ways to
cut expenses and recover revenue.

health systems achieved through optimizing
their instrument trays (cover
story); the financial burden of unprofessional
behavior from hospital staff,
particularly physicians, when it is left
unchecked (pp 14-17); and the operational
improvements associated with robust
electronic health record and block
scheduling systems (pp 20-23).

month: the next installment of the Leadership
Series, featuring best practices
when mentoring and working legislatively
from Kay Ball, PhD, RN, CNOR,
CMLSO, FAAN (cover story); a look into
how the occurrence of miscounts and
lost sharps is recollected differently by
individual OR personnel in the room
(pp 18-19); and a crash course on the
nationally recognized accreditation from
the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory
Health Care (pp 24-27).
Future OR Manager articles will delve
into other cost reduction strategies, including
further coverage of drug shortages
and exploring tips for single-use
device reprocessing, ways to mitigate
unprofessional behavior, cross-specialty
specialization, contracts between ambulatory
surgery centers and anesthesia
providers, and return on technologydriven
