of air (0.4 ppm) in the workplace for an
8-hour work shift, 40-hour work week.
The AORN guidelines have long included
safe handling practices for EtO,
including the OSHA exposure limits.
What is new is that mixtures of EtO consisting
of 10% EtO and 90% hydrochlorofluorocarbon
are no longer available
in the US, per US Environmental Protection
Agency regulations. Only 100% EtO
is being used in the US.
Quality control
The use of instrument tracking systems
is also addressed in the guideline.
Many instrument tracking systems provide
the sterilization lot control information
on the label. However, even if an
instrument tracking system does not
include the lot control tracking information,
the addition of the lot control
information in the form of a handwritten
identifier or load control sticker is no
longer required.
If a sterilization failure occurs, additional
guidance is provided on how to
investigate, document, and report on
the failure. The investigation should be
conducted with an interdisciplinary team
in a standardized, systematic manner.
Water quality for steam supply is
an important factor for the quality of
steam, and the guideline recommends
monitoring and controlling the water
supply used for steam production.
A new recommendation that provides
guidance on being stewards of our environment
was also added because
human health is dependent upon the
environment, and we all have an ethical
and professional responsibility to protect
the environment.
Recommendation XI, The healthcare
organization should assess the environmental
impact of sterilization processes
and equipment, provides strategies for
reducing the impact of sterilization on
the environment.
To provide the best care for our patients,
we must stay abreast of best
practices. The new AORN Guideline for
Sterilization provides current evidencebased
best practices. This article outlines
some of the changes from the
previous edition.
