example, basic information such as
specialty, department, and contact information
for a product requester can
be stored in one table and linked to
records of all of prior product requests
in another table.
These data can be pulled together
very easily in a report format. Relational
databases are quite common
in healthcare data management, and
there should be ample expertise within
any healthcare facility to create such a
database.
Implementing the new system
The new software improved several functions
of the committee, and premeeting
functions were enhanced, thereby maximizing
time efficiency. Workflows using
our initial in-house database are very
similar to our current workflows using
a national vendor's software product.
Product requests are entered via a link
on our facility's home page. The OR supply
chain analyst enters the requested
products into a products table along with
its associated costs, description, and
any supporting documentation such as
Food and Drug Administration MAUDE
(Manufacturer and User Facility Device
Experience) reports. Additional related
products and equipment are also entered
to provide a total cost profile.
If the product is supplanting a product
already in use, the existing product
costs are entered to provide net financial
data. The day before each committee
meeting, key committee members
meet to ensure the information is complete
and to plan activities such as preliminary
discussions about the product
requests. The requests are added as
agenda items, and reminder emails with

Survey marks 25 years with rise
in volume and open positions
A
fter several years of stability,
primarily a result
of the 2008 economic
downturn, there are signs that
OR nurses are once again on the
move, according to the 25th annual
OR Manager Salary/Career
Survey.
The percentage of respondents
reporting an increase in RN
open positions compared with 12
months ago nearly tripled (32% vs
11% in 2014), and the percentage
reporting an increase in open positions
for surgical technologists
(STs) has more than doubled (28%
vs 12%).
RN turnover in the past year
increased for 31% of respondents,
compared with 21% in 2014, with
ST turnover increasing for 21%
of respondents, unchanged from
2014.
Continuing a trend in recent
years, respondents indicated it's
getting harder to fill those open
positions; 69% say recruiting RNs
is more difficult compared with 12
months ago, whereas 51% in 2014
and 46% in 2013 found it hard to
staff their ORs.
Recruiting experienced STs is
less of an issue, although more
than a third (38%) of respondents
report more difficulty with recruitment.
