wanted to experience more of the full
sweep of perioperative care, not just
what goes on in the OR. In response to
this suggestion, the clinical rotations
were redesigned to include PAT, the
PACU, and preoperative holding.
Build recruiting into the program.
As noted above, the nursing recruiter
meets with the students on the last day
of the program to discuss employment
opportunities. In addition, the recruiter
remains in close contact with students
as they move through graduation and
licensure. The core goal of a perioperative
immersion experience is to build a
pool of potential hires, so program leaders
should not be shy about asking for
what they want.
Establish a tracking system.
Whereas the PIP students are currently
placed at two campuses, they
could be hired at other campuses
within the NYU Langone Health system.
For immersion programs serving
multihospital organizations, a central
tracking system would save time and
increase the accuracy in identifying
the immersion hires from across all
campuses. It would also help nursing
leaders track retention rates.

Cost-effective strategy
As the nursing shortage intensifies, OR
management teams will naturally consider
devoting more resources to recruiting
efforts. However, these efforts can
be costly. Recruitment advertising alone

Compared to these expenditures, an
OR clinical immersion program is very
cost-effective. Once the program has
been established, it requires relatively
little in terms of staff time and attention,
and it yields significant returns in
the form of new hires. We have found
that the PIP students who convert to
employees are focused, prepared, and
eager to make a commitment to a career
in perioperative services.
