systems got a vote of confidence
in December 2019 when
Moody's Investors Service revised its
2020 outlook from negative to stable.
The report projected an increase in operating
cash flows by 2% to 3%.
Moody's says increased reimbursements
and higher patient volumes will
boost revenue. But it also projects
higher labor costs and payment problems
stemming from bad debt and underinsured
patients, so managing expenses
continues to be crucial.
A November 2019 analysis of 2,127
hospitals by Navigant cited a staggering
$25.7 billion in unnecessary hospital
supply chain spending, representing a
nearly 12% increase since 2017.
The study included medical and implantable
devices, medical/surgical and
pharmaceutical supplies used in patient
care departments, and costs of supplies
related to buildings/fixtures, maintenance,
and plant operations.
Navigant suggests hospitals could
save up to $12.1 million per year. It
says supply chain operators are selecting
the most efficient services, products,
and procedures and weeding out
ones of low value. They are also partnering
with physicians to standardize
preference items and getting support
from physician executives in leading
standardization efforts.

Attendees at the 2020 OR Business
Management Conference (ORBMC) will
learn how to streamline inventory, present
case cost data to surgeons, and cut
costs on implants and other devices-
as well as how to improve case scheduling
and other aspects of patient care.
Among the results being presented:
* a $250,000 inventory reduction over
a 6-month period at Inova Health
* a $19.6 million savings from sharing
equipment across facilities at Kaiser
Permanente
* a $91,000 annual savings from preference
card standardization at UMC
Health System
* a 33% increase in case volume
achieved in tandem with a 6% reduction
in materials expenses and
a 7% reduction in nursing overtime
expenses at Heywood Healthcare.
