his relationship started with a
conversation in an airport bar in
Washington DC. We were discussing
our similar cardiac surgery backgrounds
and the Denver Bronco's linebacker,
Karl Mecklenburg, who, coincidently,
was the son of a surgeon with
whom she had worked.
This conversation has grown into
more than 35 years of friendship and
admiration for one of the top perioperative
leaders in the country.

I
t has been a roller coaster of a
ride for almost 2 years now in both
our private and professional lives.
No one has a crystal ball, but I would
guess that there will be more bumps in
the road before we arrive at something
close to normal-whatever normal will
look like in the future.
In our work lives, the perioperative
arena has been through many changes
and challenges. We grappled with long
time stretches of closed ORs and cancelled
cases; with deploying staff to
other areas of the hospital, transitioning
from the perioperative space to care
for inpatients; and restarting surgical
procedures with the added pressure of
needing to make up for lost volume.

Best practices for hiring a consultant
With all these additional stressors,
many of the more experienced perioperative
directors have decided to retire
or change careers. This has resulted in
onboarding nurse directors who may not
be ready to take on the responsibilities
of directing the complexities of a perioperative
department. To keep these
new leaders, we need to support and
educate them on how to be successful.
Where to start looking
So where do these leaders look for
help? Perioperative services are very different
from other nursing departments.
