ontrolling electrosurgical smoke
is a major challenge in many
ORs. In 1996, the National Institute
for Occupational Safety and Health
published a policy on controlling smoke
from lasers and electrosurgical procedures,
and over the years, studies have
linked adverse health effects with electrosurgical
smoke exposure. Yet healthcare
providers have differing opinions
about the need for smoke evacuation,
and achieving a 100% surgical smokeLeadership

igh rates of burnout among
healthcare providers-between
35% and 54% of US nurses and
physicians, and between 45% and 60%
of medical students and residents-
have raised concerns about patient and
provider safety. Burnout, a psychological
syndrome featuring emotional exhaustion,
depersonalization, and a reduced
sense of personal accomplishment, is
increasingly prevalent in healthcare, and
is linked to the more than 400 physician
suicides that occur each year.

crucial for surviving and thriving
in the stressful OR environment, espeH

when adverse events occur. In addition
to counseling and other resources,
some organizations have found peer support
to be especially helpful for dealing
with the aftermath of such events.

SCL Health Lutheran Medical Center
in Wheat Ridge, Colorado, however, has
done just that. With determination, a financial
grant, and help on a global scale
from the hospital system's perioperative
collaborative, all eight hospitals in the
Colorado and Montana sites of SCL (Sisters
of Charity of Leavenworth) Health
system have become smoke free.
