Building leadership diversity

company, when we recently celebrated
the work of a board quality committee I
was part of, I was the only minority person
present. "
The experience of Dawson, system
vice president for perioperative services
at CommonSpirit Health in Chicago,
reflects the work that still needs to be
done to increase leadership diversity.
Results from the 2022 OR Manager
survey provide further evidence: 76.1%
of leaders in hospitals and 84.4% of
leaders in ambulatory surgery centers
(ASCs) are White (sidebar, OR manager
demographics).
Diversity initiatives too often focus
more on staff than leaders. But given
the adage that change starts at the top,
creating a diverse leadership team is
an essential first step on an organization's
diversity, equity, inclusion (DEI)
journey. In addition to a moral imperative
to " do the right thing " , leadership
diversity makes good business sense
and improves care (sidebar, Value of
leadership diversity).

never forget the day her facility's
loudspeaker announced that an
imminent life-threatening event was occurring.
She was working in a cardiac
care unit at an urban medical building
that housed both medical offices and
inpatient units when an armed man
came into the facility and shot a surgeon.
Unfortunately, the announcement
was not specific, so she and the other
staff did not realize there was an active
shooter in the building. They only knew
something horrible had happened.

Dalton and everyone on her unit survived,
but she was devastated when
she heard that a surgeon was killed. He
had been a dear colleague for whose
