R Manager's three-part series
on the state of the perioperative
workforce is based on conversations
with perioperative leaders in hospitals
and ambulatory surgery centers
(ASCs) of various sizes and locations.
Part 1, published in the April issue,
focused on the hospital OR setting. A
separate article on ASCs is included
in this issue alongside Part 2, which
examines areas outside the OR-postanesthesia
care unit (PACU) and sterile
processing department (SPD). Part
3 will turn to OR leaders and explore
how they are supporting themselves
and other managers in meeting today's
challenges.

How benchmarking data informs leading
practices: Part 2

R Manager recently performed
a survey that looked at leading
practices-innovative, peoplecentered,
evidence-informed practices
that have been implemented by teams
in an organization and can encompass
best practices and benchmarking-in
ORs around the country that can be
used as a guide to set and accomplish
goals.
This is the second of a two-part article
series presenting the results of
the survey, which can help inform OR
leaders on how their facilities' performance
compares with others. Part 1,
published in April 2023 (pp 1,15-17)
included survey data on flip rooms,
scheduling, preference cards, first case
on-time starts, and sterile processing
department. Part 1 also defined the
terms " best practices, " " benchmarking, "
and " leading practices, " which are
often used interchangeably in healthcare.
