Among the more than 180 exhibits,
a Surgical Robotics Showcase was
featured for the first time. Both that
and the hybrid OR exhibit offered an
up-close look at equipment as well as
networking and education on the exhibit
floor and in sessions.
The number of posters burgeoned
to more than 60 this year, and authors
were on hand to explain innovations in
patient care, staffing models, and clinical
practice at their facilities.
Trending topics
" New and different " characterized many
presentations, and nontraditional aspects
of patient care-such as the impact
of social determinants, the rise
in substance use and abuse, and the
aftermath of disasters-were some of
the most timely and compelling topics.
The increase in disadvantaged patients-those
lacking health insurance,
adequate nutrition, and language skills,
for example-has broadened the scope
of patient care far beyond clinical aspects.
Jacob Runion, MBA, BSN, RN,
from the Cleveland Clinic, and Janet
Duran, DNP, MSN, MHA, RN, from Fairview
Hospital and ASC, a regional hospital
of the Cleveland Clinic, explained the
impact of socioeconomic factors and
ethical considerations, and provided
a blueprint for OR managers to use in
their facilities.
Now that marijuana is legal in many
states, an increasing number of surgical
patients may be using (or abusing)
cannabis. Lois Schick, MN, MBA, RN,
CPAN, CAPA, FASPAN, from Lutheran
Medical Center, Wheat Ridge, Colorado,
gave a primer on the chemicals in the
drug, methods of consumption, and its
effects on the brain and body. She explained
the properties and side effects

of both recreational and medical marijuana,
and suggested questions nurses
should ask their patients during preoperative
screening.
Many facilities regularly conduct disaster
drills, but even so, who is ever
really prepared for victims of a mass
shooting? A panel of nurse and physician
leaders shared what they experienced
during the 2013 Boston Marathon
bombing and the 2017 shootings
at Orlando's Pulse nightclub and the
Las Vegas Route 91 Harvest music festival.
Though the circumstances and
resources differed in each event, many
lessons learned were similar and will be
helpful for any healthcare provider facing
a sudden influx of patients in critical
condition.
The panel, moderated by Patricia C.
Seifert, MSN, RN, COR, FAAN, included
Sherry Buxton, MBA, RN, NEA-BC, from
Orlando Regional Medical Center in Florida;
Janet David-Lustina, MBA, BSN,
BAP, RN, from the University Medical
Center of Southern Nevada, Las Vegas;
and Wilton Levine, MD, from Massachusetts
General Hospital, Boston.

Patient and staff engagement, resiliency,
compassion, and good communication
were common themes running
through all of the keynote presentations.

with her thoughts on the " Reality-Based
Rules of the Workplace. " Wakeman is
president and founder of Reality-Based
Leadership and author of No Ego: How
Leaders Can Cut the Costs of Workplace
Drama, End Entitlement and Drive Big
Results and Reality-Based Leadership
and the Reality-Based Rules of the Workplace.
Wakeman
urged the audience to
change the work culture from one of
entitlement to one of personal accountability.

a lot of laughter but also served
as a backdrop for serious advice about

managing difficult employees and turning

" Most traditional leadership philosophies
have taught you to try to fix reality
as if that's what's causing your
staff pain, but I'm going to teach you
how to call your people to greatness so
they can get more skills. It's not reality
that's the issue; it's their approach, "
she told attendees.
Over the past 10 years, she said,
staff have been given more development
opportunities, and more money
has been spent on training, but
" drama " -behavior that includes judging,
venting, gossiping, and storytelling-is
increasing, and engagement
has stayed flat. " A leader's new role
is simply to eliminate emotional waste
(drama) by facilitating good mental processes, "
she said.
She explained how leaders need to
change people's mindsets and help
them grow. To illustrate this point, she
told a funny story about her frustrations
with grocery shopping and how she conquered
those by taking a different approach
(enlisting the help of her children)
and changing her mindset.
