Seven challenges of Trendelenburg positioning devices

Sliding in Trendelenburg can cause the patient postoperative pain
or even serious injury. And yet, sliding solutions may create several
other challenges. One strong Trendelenburg positioning solution
exists that meets current patient positioning guidelines, permits unrestricted
surgical access, and promotes efficient workflow processes
specific to the robotic-assisted surgery environment.
Clinical challenges of current Trendelenburg
positioning devices
1) When in Trendelenburg position, friction, shearing, and abdominal
wall injury may occur due to the patient sliding toward the
head of the operating table during a robotic-assisted surgical
procedure.
2) Direct pressure upon the brachial plexus from the use of shoulder
braces is a known cause of neuropathy related to pressure
injury.
3) Safety straps across the chest may constrict chest expansion
during respiration.
4) Surgical incisions and insertion of lateral trocars may be hindered
by the dimensions of patient positioners.
5) Inconsistent, hand cut sizes of foam padding, secured with tape,
take time and can negatively impact workflow and room turnover
timing.
6) Supply areas can be inundated with large packs of single use
positioning systems requiring significant storage space.
7) Environmental impact and costs from use of large disposable
positioning systems require improvement.
