James X Stobinski: A leader paying it
forward
met Jim at one of our first West
Coast OR Manager Conferences in
San Francisco in the early 90s. He
was a speaker that year, and we were
seated at the same table at the Speaker's
Dinner. Jim was still in the Navy
and was wearing his white uniform.
That night, our table became known
as the " fun table, " due in no small part
to Jim's lively banter.

I have watched Jim grow over the
years as a leader-earning his PhD
and becoming the head of the CompeTechnology

Englewood, Colorado.
His passion, knowledge,
and drive for excellence

Augmented and virtual reality bring hightech
efficiency to the OR

OVID-19 was a catalyst that
helped accelerate innovation in
healthcare by a decade, says Jay
Banerjee, chief operating officer and
cofounder of ImmersiveTouch, a virtual
reality (VR) surgery company in Chicago.
" Many things that would have taken
20 to 30 years happened sooner, " Banerjee
says. " Telemedicine; electronic
health records; remote conferencing,
collaboration, and training; and not relying
on cadavers " are now commonplace
in a healthcare professional's day.
And healthcare systems' increased
adoption of technology included a spike
in interest in using augmented reality
(AR) and VR tools to
improve the surgical
process and increase
access to surgical decision-making.
These
tools also provided a
new means of training
for both surgical techniques
and safety procedures.
" This technology helps increase

communications across stakeholders
in the OR, " Banerjee says. " VR allows
everyone access to patients' information
before a surgical procedure in an
intuitive way. "
