Q: Does standardization get
harder depending on the size
of a facility? How is complexity
measured?

I have heard hospital leaders say, " We
need to have the exact same definition
for X, " and that is their standardization
project. Maybe that is true, and they
do need the same definition across all
their campuses, but it is also both yes
and no. We need some flexibility from
facility to facility; it is very different, for
instance, to prepare a patient for neuro
or cardiac surgery, and it is very different
from inpatient to outpatient.
Our tool allows for different definitions
depending on the location. iQueue
helps facilities to focus less on standardizing
things that maybe do not need
to be standardized, and more on identifying
the common goals and implementing
a consistent process to achieve
those goals throughout different departments.
Generally
speaking, academic medical
centers can be more challenging
because they have more stakeholders.
There are more departments, and every
department has a chair. A facility's size
may lead to complexity, but even the
biggest facility, if there's cohesiveness
at the top, can smoothly implement a
new software. Whether you are an acute
care hospital with 1,500 beds or one
with 200 beds, you still have a similar
set of goals. More often than not, it all
boils down to capacity management:
doing more with less and running ORs
more efficiently.
There are many different variables
that make the process more complex
or more straightforward. There is
maybe an instinct for bigger facilities
to approach change with this attitude
of, " This is going to be a nightmare. "
What I've seen, however,
is that it's
not necessarily the physical size of the
facility or its operational capacity that
determines how easy or difficult change
will be, but the state of operations and
how many people are involved in the
process.
Still, we work with everybody. Be it
physicians, clinic schedulers, C-suite,
clinical and/or business managers; if
you're in perioperative services, our
goal is to keep you happy, even if you
have competing interests. We know how
critical it is to understand everyone's
interests and help them achieve said
interests, regardless of their role within
the organization.
