Decade of salary data shows mix of
small gains, stagnation for OR leaders

How gamification improves OR training,

is nearly constant. From
nurse managers to cardiac surgeons,
all modern healthcare professionals
must train consistently to remain
current with the latest guidelines,
technologies, and techniques. However,
the need for updated skills can add to
the existing burdens of high caseloads,
staff shortages, and the reverberating
effects of COVID-19.

Valuable teaching tools are available
to help, including hospital simulation
labs with beds, pumps, and monitors
as well as high-tech medical mannequin
patients that bleed, sweat, and respond
to medication. However, such tools are
cost prohibitive for many hospitals. Of
the more than 6,000 hospitals in the
US, just 10% have simulation labs.
And despite their exorbitant cost-
$200,000 to $1.6 million, with another
$15,000 in annual maintenance fees-
these simulation labs often feature outdated
visuals that cannot match the detailed
graphics of modern video games.
Even if a simulation lab is available,
finding time at work to do the requisite
training can be prohibitive. Whether the
goal is to earn the latest nursing certification
or learn the intricacies of the latest
surgical technique, training has had
