Next-Gen Disruptors: Technologies Transforming the OR
Installment #1, presented by LeanTaaS
BY ELIZABETH STOCUM
AI's pivotal role in transforming OR efficiency,
now and in the future
S
urgical procedures are necessary
steps in patient journeys-no
one wants to have surgery, but
most people will need it at some point
for care continuity and better quality of
life. To best support positive outcomes,
optimal recovery periods, and smooth
transitions into postoperative care,
these procedures must be performed in
a timely, predictable way.
The OR's revenue potential, particularly
from elective surgical procedures,
is very high-as are potential
costs. It is estimated that ORs generate
60% to 70% of a hospital's
revenue, as well as up to 40% of expenses.
Rising patient demand for
surgical procedures will only increase
this revenue potential. The aging US
population will drive surgical volumes
to grow by 3.5% per year through
2028, per a recent market report.
Constraints, challenges in
manually driving OR efficiency
The trend of growing surgical demand
unfortunately corresponds with an ongoing
constraint of supply. OR leaders'
top concerns for 2024 include retaining
sufficient surgical staff and anesthesia
resources to perform their caseloads,
a recent survey by LeanTaaS in partnership
with OR Manager found.
The cost of a single minute of OR
time, while varying among health systems
and locations, always points to
the operational complexity inherent in
the OR. In different studies, the cost
has been estimated as $16.21 at an
orthopedic trauma OR, not including
surgeons or anesthesiologist fees, to
$36 or $37 in the state of California,
to $150 for excessive turnover time
between cases at a New York academic
hospital. Minimizing and standardizing
these costs require a degree of efficiency
that is hard to achieve without
the support of technology.

Defining AI in the OR
AI lifts and delivers actionable information
from datasets that are too large
to be parsed manually. Unlike less
advanced technology, AI goes beyond
identifying simple patterns in the data,
instead drawing conclusions from it and
responding to them. In the OR, an AI
solution can pull from electronic health
record (EHR) data on past and current
patients, surgeons, staff, equipment,
past schedules, and upcoming cases.
Using that data, the solution identifies
patterns, then matches the aligned,
" Within 1 year of implementing iQueue for Operating Rooms, an
AI-powered solution, we increased overall block utilization by 11% and
prime time utilization by 3%. That's with a 7% reduction in available
rooms. We're using our space a lot more efficiently. "
-Megan Eubanks, senior director of business operations,
perioperative and procedural services, The University of Kansas Health System
To schedule one surgical procedure,
stakeholders must coordinate availability
of time, rooms, and equipment
like robots, as well as the right surgical
team. Manually aligning these assets
to fully meet patient demand, especially
for the future, is complicated and
relies on multiple communications like
phone calls and emails among stakeholders.
Despite staff's best efforts
and expertise, at many hospitals, ORs
and equipment sit idle and cannot be
scheduled to full efficiency. Cases are
delayed, leaving revenue on the table,
while patients, risking complications,
await treatment.
To deliver a high-standard of seamless
patient care, drive revenue, and
reduce costs for their own organizations
and the hospital as a whole, today's
ORs must grow case volume while optimizing
resources and staff. Artificial
intelligence (AI) technology provides a
means to accomplish this.
available supply of surgical time and
resources with demand for them.
By surfacing this information, AI can
help produce a schedule for the next
week that accommodates as many
cases as possible; make staff assignments
that automatically account for
staff's certifications and skills; and predict
surgeons who are most likely to
use available block time.
In short, AI presents accurate and
actionable knowledge to stakeholders
that could otherwise be lost amid
the sea of data. Using this knowledge,
stakeholders can address the OR's operational
intricacies, improving scheduling
and addressing further operational
roadblocks in an intelligent and futurelooking
manner. AI technology enables
efficient, responsive, and patient-centered
OR management, promoting stronger
care delivery and financial health
throughout the hospital.
Predictive analytics anticipate
needs
Predictive analytics showcase the future-facing
impact of AI technology. By
leveraging the vast datasets already
available in EHRs and identifying past
patterns, predictive analytics capabilities
foresee future OR demands with
high accuracy, allowing hospitals to proactively
plan and manage resources.
This foresight helps ensure that ORs
are not only reacting to immediate
needs but are prepared for future patient
demand.
