to amazing technological

leaps.
Three decades ago, the most complex
surgery was a basic laparoscopic cholecystectomy.
" Now, we're doing deep
brain stimulation and minimally invasive
robotic procedures, " Ringlein says.
Brain stimulators help patients with
Parkinson's disease and reduce shaking
symptoms. Ann Arbor was also one
of the first facilities to implement a
transcatheter aortic valve replacement
program. " That's what I am proud of:

type of programs to
patients who need it, "
Ringlein says.
The Department of
Veterans Affairs (commonly
referred to as the
VA, or Veterans Administration)
is one of the
most financially complex
he past 5 years have brought a
plethora of changes and challenges
to the healthcare environment,
with the COVID-19 pandemic
looming as the largest. Meanwhile, OR
Manager has been collecting data on
staffing, job satisfaction and other issues
important to OR leaders in our
annual salary/career survey. Nearly half
a decade after the World Health Organization's
declaration of the global health
emergency that became the pandemic,
it is a good time to pause and look
back to see how perioperative roles
T
have (or have not) evolved, starting with
the business manager. (Future articles
will focus on 10-year lookbacks of career
and salary insights for perioperative
leaders at both hospitals and ambulatory
surgery centers.)
Survey data from perioperative leaders
consistently show that fewer than
half of hospitals have business managers,
topping out at 43% in 2022
and 2019. Some organizations may
conclude that they simply cannot afford
to hire a business manager. At

$325.1 billion, a 5.4% increase from
