surveys from The Joint Commission
(TJC) can be nerve-racking for hospitals
and surgical facilities. In an hours-long
workshop at the 2024 OR Manager
Conference, John Rosing, MHA, FACHE,
identified a number of specific " hot
spots " : areas where ORs and surgical
centers are likely to get into trouble.
Leveraging his experience as executive
vice president and principal at Patton
Healthcare Consulting (an affiliate
of HBS of Langhorne, Pennsylvania),
Rosing also offered tips on how to conduct
a self-evaluation by " seeing with

the surveyor's eyes, "
particularly
for issues
involving central sterile
processing and highlevel
disinfection (HLD).

Quality and safety standards

surveys are predicated largely on the
Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services
(CMS) Conditions of Participation
(CoP). The latest data indicates a rise
in requirements for improvement (RFIs)
as well as condition-level deficiencies
documented by surveyors from 2023 to
