reportedly approved a record number of
AI-driven devices in 2024. Usage varies,
but most notably:
* AI in diagnostics and monitoring.
AI-enabled tools are providing enhanced
preoperative assessments
and real-time monitoring during procedures.
Examples include algorithms
predicting patient deterioration
and AI-backed digital pathology
tools for remote analysis.
* Robotics in surgery. Surgical robots
are most commonly used in urology
and gynecology, with robotic systems
improving precision in minimally invasive
surgeries, reducing complications
and recovery times.
AI and robotics are redefining surgery,
and in 2025, these technologies
will be integral to care. Successful implementation
will require ongoing staff
training, adjusting workflows, and monitoring
returns on investment.
Safe, efficient facility design
Construction and design with surgical
practice in mind prioritize patient safety
and provider well-being now more than
ever. For instance:
* Updated standards for ASCs. The
Joint Commission now mandates
compliance with the National Fire
Protection Association's Life Safety
Code and improvements in patient
rights communication.
* Trauma-informed design. According
to the CMS, incorporating biophilic
elements, natural light, and modular
spaces should boost patient comfort
and reduce staff burnout.
* Better infection control. Negative
pressure rooms and antimicrobial
surfaces are being prioritized.

* Sustainability measures. Adoption of
energy-efficient mechanical, electrical,
and plumbing systems are reducing
facilities' carbon footprint.
Facilities also are moving toward
electric-fueled systems and using robust
waste-capture technologies. More examples
of design improvements include
hybrid ORs-combining diagnostic imaging
and surgical capabilities-becoming
standard, and modular designs and
stormwater management systems being
used in disaster preparedness initiatives.
