The
US Bureau of Labor Statistics estimated
in the private healthcare and
social assistance industries, the number
of nonfatal occupational injuries
and illnesses resulting from intentional
injury by another person nearly doubled
in an 8-year period, jumping from 8,180
in 2011 to 15,230 in 2018. More recently,
a 2022 survey by Press Ganey
revealed that at least two nurses are
assaulted every hour. This devastating
number translates to approximately 57
assaults per day, 1,739 assaults per
month, and 5,217 assaults per quarter.
This state of affairs is both deplorable
and unacceptable. We can and must
do a better job of recognizing, reporting,
and preventing WPV.

sterilization

Lack
of instrumentation, lack of time to
process instrumentation, or tight surgical
schedules are never good reasons to
perform immediate use steam sterilization
(IUSS, a standard steam sterilization
cycle with little to no dry time). When
the procedure is justified, an IUSS cycle
needs to be performed in accordance
with the instrument and sterilization container's
instructions for use (IFU).
