(SPDs) face unique
challenges compared to their
counterparts in other perioperative settings.
" The main challenge is a lack
of understanding of the actual job requirements,
not only by people in other
departments but by healthcare as a
whole, " says Anthony Bondon, CRCST,
CHL, BSM, AAS, SME, LSSYB, central
sterile manager at HSHS St. John's
Hospital in Springfield, Illinois. During
the pandemic, for example, HR personnel
and administrators thought it would
be easy to move someone from another
department, such as environmental services,
to reprocess instruments.
This knowledge deficit of the field
can hamper SPD leaders. For instance,
