Rethinking life after 65: A three-pillar
approach to retirement planning

With several major gatherings planned for this spring-including those from
AORN, AONL, ASCA, and ASPAN-a bustling events season offers perioperative
leaders valuable opportunities for reflection on our careers and futures.
Speaking of futures, the 2024 OR Manager Salary/Career Survey revealed an
intriguing shift: only 9% of perioperative nurses plan to retire within the next 2
years, down from 19% in 2023. Moreover, 54% intend to continue working until
2035 or beyond. These statistics tell a compelling story about how the idea of
retirement is changing.
Below, veteran perioperative nurse Rosemary Welde, RN, MBA, BCC, explores
this transformation, drawing on her own challenging retirement experience. Focusing
mostly on financial readiness at that time, she recalls having limited knowledge
of Medicare as well as the " soft side " of retirement. Now, she considers
retirement a passion, devoting time to researching on the topic and engaging with
her community through a healthy aging task force and library retirement planning
program. She has given presentations on the following three-pillar approach-
self, health, and finances-to more than a dozen audiences.

nce seen as the golden chapter
of leisure and rest after decades
of hard work, retirement is undergoing
a dramatic transformation. Retirement
is not an endpoint but rather
a new beginning shaped by economic
realities, longer lifespans, and shifting
personal aspirations. An increasing
number of retirees are choosing to-or
needing to-stay in the workforce longer.
Phased retirement, in which individuals
decrease hours or take consulting
roles rather than exiting the workforce
entirely, is gaining in popularity.
It is important to start planning this
" new beginning " 3 to 5 years prior to
the expected retirement date. Focus on
the three interrelated aspects of retirement:
your personal aspirations, your
finances, and your health.
The soft side of retirement
Those who claim, " I can't wait to retire! "
often do not have a plan as to what they
will retire. Doing nothing may sound
great, but it can get old quickly. It takes
the average person 2.5 years to assimilate
into retirement from full time work.
We underestimate the importance
that work plays in structuring our lives.
Work provides purpose, social connections,
and meaning, and it influences
health outcomes. Prior to retirement, it
is important to foster creativity in any

interests you have so you can transition
to retirement more easily. The joy is to
do anything that may interest you and
explore social activities, hobbies, travel
opportunities, and/or volunteer. Say yes
to your priorities and no to others that
are not part of your purpose.
Having a vision of how you will
spend your days in retirement will help
you assess if you have the resources
to meet your needs. According to AARP,
critical success factors to ensuring a
happy retirement include the following:
* having a sense of purpose
* maintaining social connectiveness
* pursuing lifelong learning
* maintaining multigenerational friends
* staying mobile
* being open to new things.
The financial side of retirement
Retirement is not about optimizing returns.
However, most of us can calculate
how much we will need to retire comfortably
based on our spending habits. According
to Fidelity, by age 30, the goal is
to have one time your yearly income; by
age 40, three times your yearly income;
by age 50, six times your yearly income;
by age 60, eight times your yearly income;
and at retirement, ten times your
yearly income. So, if your yearly income
is $150,000 when you retire, you may
need $1.5 million for retirement.
