RNs should expect to see big
salary bump by 2033
Increasing demand for nurses is driving
up salaries for RNs in the US, an October
4 Careers of the Future projection
reports. According to this research from
telecommunications company TollFreeForwarding,
RNs are projected to see
a pay increase of nearly $13 more per
hour by 2033.
RNs made $33.13 in hourly earnings
in 2013, which rose to $45.49 in 2023.
That is expected to rise to $74.09 in
2033.
According to the US Bureau of Labor
Statistics, registered nursing is one of
the fastest-growing occupational fields
in the country. The US is expected to
need an additional 193,100 RNs per
year over the next 10 years.
Nursing school programs declined for
the first time in 20 years, which could
be one factor driving higher nursing salaries.
The report notes that the primary
driver for rising salaries is the demand
for the job and the number of qualified
workers available to fill openings.

Study reveals impact of impostor
syndrome on surgery leadership
This study, titled " Leadership and Impostor
Syndrome in Surgery " and published
in the October 2023 issue of
the Journal of the American College of
Surgeons, examined how impostor syndrome-an
internalized sense of incompetence
and not belonging-impacts surgeons
holding leadership positions in
healthcare.
The study included 2,183 attending
and retired physicians in the analytic
cohort, with 1,471 (67.4%) in leadership
roles. Some highlights of the study
include:
* Male physicians were more likely
than women to hold leadership positions,
and non-US citizens were less
likely to hold leadership positions
than US citizens
* Having a leadership position was associated
with lower odds of impostor
syndrome

The study suggests that more needs
to be done to address imposter syndrome
among female surgeons, which
may be impacting their ability to accept
or thrive in leadership roles.

Rethinking the standard 98.6
degree body temperature
Looking at the temperature measurements
of more than 126,000 patients,
researchers have found that the onceaccepted
standard body temperature of
98.6 degrees may not be an accurate
measure, as reported in JAMA Internal
Medicine on September 5.
The 98.6 degree average was originally
arrived at in 1868 by German physician
Carl Wunderlich who took more
than a million temperature measurements
from 25,000 people. For the current
study, the scientists analyzed oral
temperature measurements from more
than 126,000 adults seen at Stanford
Health Care between 2008 and 2017.
They also tracked patient information
including height, weight, sex and age,
as well as time of day.
They found that the average oral
temperature measured around 97.9 degrees,
nearly a degree lower than the

body temperatures have dropped because
humans are getting healthier.

The
Joint Commission: Sentinel
events remain high in 2023
Data from The Joint Commission on
sentinel events for the first half of 2023
are out and look to be on par with last
year's all-time high numbers, Becker's
Clinical Leadership October 2 reports.
Data from 2022 showed events rising to
1,208 after hovering between 800 and
900 from 2010 to 2020.
Here are some highlights, according
to The Joint Commission 2023 report:
* 720 sentinel events were recorded
between January 1 and June 30,
2023
* The most commonly reported sentinel
event were falls (47%), unintended
retention of a foreign object
(9%); assault, rape, and sexual assault
or homicide (8%); and wrongsite
surgery (8%)
* Patient suicides were lower in the
first half of 2023 than in 2022; leading
factors associated with suicide
include failure to follow policies, poor
communication of critical information,
and inadequate precautions for
high-risk or impaired patients
* As in the 2022 report, 88% of the
above sentinel events occurred in a
hospital setting
* Last year, 20% of sentinel events
resulted in patient death; in 2023,
18% have resulted in patient death.
The report attributes these sentinel
events, of which only a fraction are reported,
to a breakdown in communication,
lack of teamwork, and failure to
follow policies.
