Perioperative leaders know burnout

taffing crises continue to plague
the healthcare industry, but that
cannot continue to be the focus
of perioperative leaders. That was the
poignant message that underscored
the attendee experience at the 36th OR
Manager Conference in Nashville, Tennessee.
After attending the engaging
keynotes, numerous breakout sessions,
and several networking events, attendees
walked away with the drive and inspiration
to worry less about the " crisis "
and focus more on what truly matters-
returning to prepandemic patient safety
standards and ensuring the well-being
of the entire perioperative staff.
Let's take a deep dive into those
and other key themes that emerged
from this year's conference.
Key theme: Leadership
" Great leaders don't manage; they lead.
They don't motivate; they inspire. They
are role models, " said Donna Cardillo,
MA, RN, CSP, FAAN, The Inspiration
Nurse, during the opening keynote,
" Passionate Leadership-Soaring to
New Heights. "
Cardillo introduced four pillars to unlock
and embrace leadership potential:
➊ Self-management. Focus on your
own self-care and wellness. Examples
include setting daily intentions,
practicing gratitude, and deep
breathing exercises.
➋ Inspire and be inspired. " Influence
is greater than power, " she said.
➌ Stretch and grow. Challenge yourself
with new opportunities, even
with the possibility of failure.
➍ Teach. Bestow the experiences and
insights you have learned onto the
next generation.
Effective leaders focus on trust, lifelong
learning, critical reasoning and creativity,
a growth mindset, inclusivity,
and positive reinforcement. Leaders'
goals should be clearer communication,
productive activity, integration, and celebration
in the team, Cardillo concluded.

among healthcare employees-seemingly
ever-present-can have an effect
of reduced energy, disengagement from
work, and decreased professional involvement.
According to research and
management consulting company Gallup,
36% of nurses are afflicted with
burnout. Here are some takeaways from
one of the best-attended workshops,
" Effectively Coping with Stress-The
Case for Wellness Integration " :
* Feelings of stress and being overwhelmed
can result in negative consequences:

Taking sick days
* Avoiding goal discussions
* Visiting the emergency department
*
Actively job seeking
* Occupational injuries-80% are
stress-induced.
* How are burnout and heightened feelings
of stress affecting the industry?
* Millennials are moving the needle
away from " the way it is currently
being done. "
* Gen Z are among the most
stressed working groups.
* Nursing skills are being applied
to different professions and industries.
