Long-term coordination
HT victims' physical and mental health
needs generally extend beyond immediate
concerns. Due to the complexity
and number of health conditions they
experience, victims require longer-term
care from diverse disciplines, including
social work, trauma recovery, behavioral
health, case management, and addiction
recovery treatment. HCPs at surgical
centers that lack such a comprehensive
service offering should contact
the main hospital system. If this is not
an option, an ambulance or local law
enforcement should transport the client
to the local emergency department.
Ensuring a seamless handoff requires a
thorough report from the sending HCP
to the receiving HCP.
Connections with anti-trafficking organizations,
such as nongovernmental
organizations (NGOs), can also facilitate
longer-term wraparound services that
aim to transition HT victims form survivors
to thrivers. Strategies for facilitating
this process include submitting an
inquiry to an NGO and researching the
availability and services of local shelters
or homes for those who have experienced
trafficking, domestic violence, or
intimate partner violence. Some provide
temporary shelter, while others may provide
more long-term housing and treatment
and/or accept victims with children.
Further
education
Overall, the significant role HCPs can
play in identifying, assisting, and advocating
for victims of HT cannot be
overstated. As detailed in Part 1 of this
series, there is a dire need to incorporate
this essential content into all
prelicensure healthcare professions programs
with continuing education to be
mandated in statute at state and/or
federal levels. This population has gone
unseen for far too long.
