THE BIG PICTURE: Ukraine's Power Plants
Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February has threatened several power-producing
facilities in Ukraine, including Europe's largest nuclear plant, Zaporizhzhya. This map
shows the largest power producers in Ukraine's power fleet as of 2018. The
dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991 contributed to severe political and economic
turmoil that affected Ukraine's energy sector, with its total primary supply falling by
more than 45% over the course of the decade.

But, as Ukraine's economy
began to recover, its energy
supply stabilized. In recent
years, the global financial
crisis during 2007-2008,
Russia's occupation of
Crimea, and the conflict in
the Donbass-where a
significant number of coal
mines are sited-have posed
further shocks, forcing the
country to halve its reliance
on coal and tamp down gas
imports from Russia. In 2018,
Ukraine's total primary
energy supply consisted of
coal (29%), natural gas (27%),
and nuclear (25%). Before
the war, the country was
earnestly exploring an
expansion of renewables and
small modular reactor
