electricity grid. Cost-effective long-duration storage
is essential for integrating and expanding the use of
clean, renewable energy resources, such as wind and
solar. Traditional pumped hydro storage is by far the
largest and most cost-effective form of energy storage
today and attention will be givento how pumped
storage could not be widely implemented.

Much attention has been given to the topic of battery
recycling, while the notion of repurposing EV battery
packs into stationary energy storage is still the subject
of the occasional pilot project. Yet the world is hurtling
to a future that includes millions of gently used electric
vehicle battery packs that are still very healthy, and
are often sitting in large warehouses. The presenter
will address the current technical challenges impeding
the widespread adoption of second life batteries
in stationary energy storage, and present real-world
deployments that have overcome these challenges,
paving the way for the widespread adoption of second
life as a replacement for the deployment of new
batteries in stationary applications.

The value of storage and renewables plus storage can
be significantly increased through analytics that continuously
optimize operations through a combination
of AI techniques. With application of reinforced learning
for bid optimization and forecasting future market
conditions with supervised learning, AI has become a
key ingredient to maximizing value. This presentation
will address analytic techniques to improve the economic
intelligence of ISO bids (both day-ahead and
real-time) along with direct override control signals to
further advance storage economics. The presentation
will show a case study in ERCOT of the optimization
techniques and AI structure to increase storage project
revenues by 30% traditional approaches. The AI
methods we apply will address techniques for nextday
and next-hour probabilistic price spikes. The
dynamic optimization structure creates economically
optimal offer strategies for the day-ahead and
real-time markets that maximizes revenue given the
price forecasts while managing the state of charge of
the system.
